Practical notes
- The tax is charged per person and per night by the accommodation, on top of the room price.
- Under-18s are exempt by law (art. L. 2333-31 of the General Code of Local Authorities), as are seasonal workers employed in the town and people in emergency or temporary housing.
- For unclassified accommodation (most Airbnb-type rentals) the tax is a percentage of the price per person per night excluding taxes, capped at the highest rate adopted by the town (€4.90 before additional taxes).
- Additional taxes are set by the department and, in some regions, by the region or transport authority: they are already included in the totals.
How the cap and the per-person cost work is explained in the official guide of the French Directorate General for Local Authorities (guide pratique, fiches 4 and 6, June 2026).
