What changes in 2027
- 1 February 2027: Visitax 2.50 × the 2027 UMA per foreign visitor (INEGI publishes the 2027 UMA in January 2027)
- 1 July 2027: cruise passengers, peso equivalent of US$15 per foreign cruise passenger (until 31 July 2028, then US$21)
Formula used
Visitax = 2.50 × UMA (daily value in force on your arrival date) × foreign travellers. From 1 February 2026: 2.50 × MXN 117.31 = MXN 293.275, rounded to MXN 293.00 per person. The Quintana Roo Fiscal Code (article 18) rounds amounts to the whole peso for payment (1 to 50 centavos down, 51 to 99 up); the official portal charges MXN 293.00 per person (checked on 30 October 2026). The UMA is updated by INEGI every January and applies from 1 February, so the Visitax changes every 1 February. Children pay the same amount as adults.
Example: 2 travellers pay MXN 586.00 in total.
Not tax advice. These fees are set by Mexican federal and Quintana Roo state law and can change. The official Visitax portal shows the exact amount before you pay.

What to know in Playa del Carmen
- Playa del Carmen is in the state of Quintana Roo (municipality of Solidaridad), so foreign visitors pay the state Visitax there.
- The amount is set by law as 2.50 UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), the official reference value in pesos that INEGI updates every January, valid from 1 February. So the Visitax changes every 1 February.
- The official portal says there is no adult or child rate: all foreign tourists pay, whatever their age.
- Foreign visitors who enter Quintana Roo through the state's southern border are exempt (article 51-Octies).
- Cruise passengers who paid the Quintana Roo cruise passenger fee (US$5, charged with the cruise ticket) do not pay the Visitax (article 51-Nonies).
Who collects it: Paid online on the official Visitax portal of the Quintana Roo Tax Administration Service (SATQ), or through companies authorised by the SATQ; not at the hotel.
Exemptions (official)
- Foreign visitors entering Quintana Roo through the southern border of the state
- Cruise passengers who paid the Quintana Roo cruise passenger fee (article 51-Nonies)
Other fees for foreign visitors to Mexico
- Federal non-resident fee (DNR): MXN 983.00 in 2026. This is the fee for the visitor document of foreign tourists (article 8, fraction I, of the Ley Federal de Derechos). The law says that for visitors arriving by air the international airline collects it and pays it to the tax authority. Visitors arriving by land do not pay it if they stay no more than 7 days; for longer stays it is paid when they leave (article 11).
- Airport migration fee on departure: MXN 231.55 in 2026, for passengers leaving Mexico on international flights; the law says the airline collects it (article 12).
- Cruise passengers. Foreign cruise passengers pay Mexico's federal visitor fee at a reduced amount set by the decree of 30 June 2025: the peso equivalent of US$10 until 30 June 2027, US$15 from 1 July 2027 and US$21 from 1 August 2028 to 30 September 2030 (converted at the Banco de México exchange rate). Re-entering Mexico on the same cruise is free. In Quintana Roo they also pay a state fee of US$5 per passenger, charged with the cruise ticket and only at the first Quintana Roo port of the trip; paying it exempts them from the Visitax (article 51-Nonies).
- Quintana Roo lodging tax: 5% of the lodging price (6% for houses, apartments and villas), on the room only, not on food and other services (Ley del Impuesto al Hospedaje, articles 4 and 8). It is due on the payment for the stay.
